What letters should you teach first to struggling readers?

📚Standard advice informs us to teach these letters first to beginning readers: M ,S, P, A, T, C, F AND I first because they are common and you can make so many words with them like mat, pat, sap etc.

📚BUT if you have some readers who are struggling to blend phonemes (sounds) and read words, I have a slightly different recommendation.
 📚Some letters make continuous sounds, like s, m, n, meaning you can stretch the sounds out, like “sssssssss”. Some letters are stop sounds, which means they are sounds made with brief puffs of air and cannot be stretched out, like p and t.

📚Students who are struggling to blend sounds might do better with letters continuous sounds like m, n, f, r, s, and the vowels. Try starting with these and practicing real and nonsense words that start with them like mat, sap, nip.

📚You also need to teach other common letter sounds such as t and p so students can read words that end with them.

📚Try these continuous sound letters and once students show progress, try stop sounds at the beginning of words like t and c.

🌎 These Feed the Recycling bin phonics activities are great to get in that practice and are fun for Earth Day.

🌎Students will read the words on the jars and place them in the recycling bin! They will hardly know they are learning.

🌎There are versions for CVC words and digraphs, vowel teams and silent e syllables!
