A Unique Way to Start the Year with Class Dojo

A unique way to introduce Class Dojo - going beyond individual student points - blog post from Reading and Writing Redhead
Hey everyone! I wanted to share with you how I was getting started with Class Dojo this year! I can’t credit myself totally – I think I read the idea somewhere but can’t recall where. I can tell you my friend Tabitha at Flapjack Educational Resources has some great ideas for Class Dojo at her website here!
So what did I do? I decided to NOT start out the year with individual students earning points. Instead, I decided to have the students earn points together by working on common goals during different lessons. When we got to 10 points we would earn a special reward or activity! I love it because it gets the kids working together and working on a common goal. It builds community and is a great, positive way to introduce it where they students are not feeling any individual pressure or comparing their own scores to other kids’ scores – its just a group effort!
Now let me be honest, I figured out AFTER The fact an easier way to do it so let me tell you the easy way to set this up!
First, go in and create a new class. I named it Mawnsters’ Class Goals. Then, instead of entering individual students names in the class list, enter the names of your subjects, such as math, science, etc. If you think you want to break a longer block of the day down you could say “Math Lesson 1” and “Math Lesson 2”. Here’s what it may look like after you do this:

Now, if you’re brand new to Class Dojo, you can click on the name and get a list of behaviors to pop up.These are the positives. But good news -you can edit them!

To do so you need to to your Class Dojo home page and click on the settings wheel like you see here!

Then if you hover/click on one of the behaviors you want to edit, the edit option comes up. Change it to suit your needs and you can also change the image.

You can change both the positive and needs work options. Here’s what we were working on for “needs work”!

When you are ready to give points, click on the “lesson” and choose a type of point and then you will see this!

After you give out a few points, you will see it looking more like this (you can change the monsters too – just on the edit menu, choose monsters instead of behaviors)! I like here how you can see how many points total we have as a class.

You can also see a circle graph if you click on reports to see how the class is doing. I give out almost all positive points right at the beginning but some of us really need to work on not socializing with friends during lessons and directions. 🙂
